Pensions : demonstrations on 16 January 2020

Nothing is settled after the Prime Minister’s announcement to remove “conditionally” the pivotal age for pension reform. Lawyers, doctors, teachers, railway workers, etc. are calling for the “withdrawal of the project”.

The intersyndicale CGT, FO, CFE-CGC, FSU, Solidaires is calling for a new intersyndicale day of strikes and demonstrations on 16 January, the sixth since the start of the movement on 5 December. “Not only is the pivotal age not withdrawn, but the Prime Minister is confirming his determination to raise the retirement age by refusing any increase in social security contributions,” the members of the intersyndicale wrote on Saturday in a press release, following the announcements by Édouard Philippe. And the intersyndicale to call for “continuing actions and mobilization and make the 16th a new day of massive interprofessional mobilization.

Lawyers’ strike

While it is true that the number of strikers, particularly at SNCF and RATP, has fallen sharply after 40 days of strikes and mobilisation, anger against pension reform remains intact for many professions. This is the case, for example, of many of France’s 68,000 lawyers who are on indefinite strike, which is singularly disruptive to hearings in all jurisdictions.
CFE-CGE executives are calling for a day of strikes and demonstrations to demand “the withdrawal of the retirement plan”. The managers’ union will meet its members at the following locations:
