The Nupes banned from the legislative elections

The Ministry of the Interior refuses to register candidates under the label of New Popular, Ecological and Social Union, because it is not incorporated as an association. It is therefore not a political party. Big anger of Mélenchon.

Hard blow for Jean-Luc Mélenchon and the parties grouped within this left-wing coalition called the New Popular, Ecological and Social Union. The Ministry of the Interior has refused to register the candidates under the label of the Nupes for the legislative elections of June 12 and 19, 2022. They will have to compete for the votes of voters under the colors of their party of origin: France Insoumise, Europe-Ecologie les Verts, the Communist Party and the Socialist Party … Reason: the Nupes does not exist as a political party because it has not been constituted as an association as required by law. It is therefore not included in the “political colour chart”.

Ensemble”, an association

It is true that the candidates of the presidential majority will run under the new label “Ensemble”, which includes several parties: La République en marche (Renaissance), the Mouvement démocrate, Horizons, Agir, Territoires de progrès, the Parti radical and En commun. But this coalition is an association chaired by Richard Ferrand, with two vice presidents (François Bayrou and Edouard Philippe) and a secretary general, Stanislas Guérini. Created on November 19, 2021 at the Mutualité, it also has a program for the legislative elections.
It can therefore be recognized in the famous “color chart”.

What is the purpose of a “political shade”?

On the one hand, there is the political label, i.e. the party to which the candidate belongs, and on the other hand, there is the “political nuance” that the candidate indicates on his ballot. The interest is to have a quick reading of the political forces present on the evening of the election.
There are 19 political shades that go from the extreme left to the extreme right through LFI, UDI, Rassemblement national, Divers droite and Divers gauche, etc.
But no ”Nupes”. The problem is that we will not be able to have a global vision of the political weight of this group. The candidates will be classified in the “Various left” category and confused with the other DG candidates whose speaking time they will have to share on the media.

A cohabitation ?

Obviously, all this does not suit Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who was counting on the group effect of the Nupes to influence the legislative elections and obtain enough deputies to force the President of the Republic to designate him as Prime Minister.
Hence his intention to refer to the Council of State. And the anger of his running mates. “Small manipulation totally anti-democratic Macron & Darmanin to distort the analysis of the results of the legislative” rants Manon Aubry on Twitter. “Macronists will be grouped in the brand new label “Together” but Nupes candidates counted separately. Are they afraid of our majority?”
The electoral campaign is finally coming to life.
