Douglas A. McGregor is a retired U.S. Army colonel, consultant and military commentator. He served as Senior Advisor to Acting Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller from November 11, 2020 until Joe Biden’s inauguration on January 20, 2021. He is concerned about the consequences of Israel’s war against Iran.

“In the last 72 hours, Israel launched a pre-emptive strike against Iran while negotiations between Washington and Tehran were still underway.
Iran was caught off guard. But it recovered more quickly from its Pearl Harbor strike than Israel had anticipated.
Less than 18 hours after Israel’s surprise attack, Iran retaliated by firing hundreds of ballistic missiles, including hypersonic missiles, at the center of Tel Aviv and across Israel.
Netanyahu begs Washington
Meanwhile, Israel’s Iron Dome has failed. Israel’s intelligence services have failed. Netanyahu now begs Washington to intervene with American military might to save Israel from certain defeat; a defeat Netanyahu has prepared with Washington’s encouragement.
At the same time, Russia, China, Pakistan and most of the Muslim world are rallying to Iran’s defense.
Supplies, equipment and technical assistance are pouring into Iran.
Time to take stock

Washington has spent $12,000 billion in the Middle East since 2003. The result? 7,000 American deaths, 50,000 wounded, open borders and 100,000 Americans dying every year from fentanyl poisoning.
Today, the United States is $37,000 billion in debt, a figure that does not include so-called “agency debt”. Seventy-seven million Americans voted for President Trump because he promised to end international conflict and halt the march toward World War III.
Trump’s mandate remains unchanged: secure America’s borders, ports and coastal waters. Deport illegal immigrants, crush criminals who murder Americans. Restore the rule of law. But not one more drop of American blood for foreign wars.
Closing the Strait of Hormuz
An Israeli strike on the island of Kharg – through which 90% of Iran’s oil exports pass – or on the Bandar Abbas terminals, and Iran would close the Strait of Hormuz. This represents 20% of the world’s oil supply.
This means disrupted supply chains and galloping inflation. The price of gas reaches $7 a gallon overnight. All working-class families are devastated. Truckers can no longer deliver food. The economy collapses. Why did this happen? So Israel, which started this senseless war, can drag the Americans into a wider, potentially nuclear, regional conflict?
We have 40,000 troops in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and the Persian Gulf. These are easy targets. Iran’s Shahed-136 drones cost $20,000 each. American Patriot missiles cost $4 million per interceptor.
Do the math. We’ll run out of missiles and go bankrupt, while the Americans go home in coffins.
The Middle East is on the brink
Here’s what Washington must do to defuse the conflict:
- Call for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council. Call for an immediate ceasefire, making clear that Washington opposes the destruction of Iran, Israel and any other Middle Eastern state.
- Demand that Israel stop killing Palestinians in Gaza and withdraw its forces from Gaza and the West Bank.
- Suspend all military aid to Israel until Israel agrees to withdraw its troops from Gaza and allow humanitarian aid to reach the population of Gaza.
- Propose the involvement of the armed forces of non-aligned countries to ensure the security of Gaza and the West Bank.
- Propose that the United States, Russia, China, India and Brazil convene a peace conference to arbitrate the conflict between Israel, Iran and Israel’s neighbors.
I’ve led American soldiers under enemy fire. I’ve seen many flag-draped coffins. I don’t want to see any more. The warmongers in Washington have had 22 years. They have failed. They lied.
They profited while America bled. The time is up.
America first means America first. Not Israel first. Not Ukraine first. Not NATO first. America first!”
