Joe Biden signed his son Hunter’s presidential pardon this 1ᵉʳ December 2024, sparing him a possible prison sentence for convictions related to illegal weapons possession and tax fraud. But the fraudulent activities of his father’s son go far beyond that.
An unexpected political turnaround
The press reports this morning that President Joe Biden has justified his decision to pardon his son Hunter by citing a “miscarriage of justice”, claiming that Hunter’s prosecution was politically motivated. A few weeks before the announcement of the sentence, which risked up to 17 years in prison, the President went back on his earlier promises.
In June, Biden had categorically ruled out any pardon, declaring: “I abide by the jury’s decision”. His spokeswoman also confirmed on November 8 that no pardon would be granted.
Conviction details
Hunter Biden was convicted in June of two felonies for purchasing a firearm in 2018, lying on a federal form about his drug use. A second case involved him for unpaid taxes of around $1.4 million.
The pardon decision is not unprecedented. Bill Clinton and Donald Trump have also pardoned members of their family entourage, albeit under different circumstances.
Already, Donald Trump has reacted on his Truth social network, questioning the fairness of this pardon.
Gas in Ukraine
Hunter Biden is no choirboy. His Wikipedia bio is peppered with scandals. Robert Hunter Biden, also known as Hunter Biden, was born on February 4, 1970 in Wilmington, Delaware.
Hunter Biden is a hedge fund, venture capital and private equity investor who has previously worked as a lobbyist, banker, government official and registered attorney for a lobbying firm.
He sits on the board of Burisma Holdings, one of Ukraine’s largest private natural gas producers, from 2014 until his term expires in April 2019.
Since early 2019, Hunter Biden has been the subject of accusations of corrupt activities concerning his business dealings in Ukraine.
Addict and alcoholic
An inveterate drug addict and alcoholic, he has always benefited from his father’s protection. Hunter sits on the board of Burisma Holdings, one of Ukraine’s largest private natural gas producers, from 2014 until his term expires in April 2019 ($600,000 annual income).
Numerous American, Russian and German media outlets claim that Hunter Biden has financed biological weapons laboratories in Ukraine. According to a press release from the Russian Embassy, published on its Telegram channel on March 25, the number of laboratories set up by Hunter Biden, with the help of the US Agency for International Development, the Georges Soros Foundation and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), would be “30 research units at 14 sites in Ukraine”. As for funding, “for the period 2018 to 2020 alone, it would amount to $32 million”.
