In an explosive regional context, Israel carried out retaliatory strikes against Iran, while the UN denounced possible crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel strikes back at Iran

One month after the Iranian attack on its territory, Israel launched “precision strikes” on military sites in Iran on Saturday October 26. The operation targeted facilities in the provinces of Ilam, Khouzistan and Tehran, causing “limited damage”, according to the Iranian authorities. Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari warned that any further escalation by Teheran would lead to a military response.

Critical situation in Gaza

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, sounded the alarm on the situation in northern Gaza, referring to “darkest hours” and possible crimes against humanity. Since the beginning of the conflict, more than 150,000 people have been killed, wounded or missing. The Israeli army also announced the loss of three young soldiers in fighting, bringing the total number of Israeli soldiers killed to 361.

Wider conflict in Lebanon

Tensions are also escalating on the Lebanese border, with further Israeli bombardments in the southern suburbs of Beirut. These strikes killed three journalists in Hasbaya and claimed twelve victims, including three children, in the east of the country.

A glimmer of hope?

Negotiations could resume in Qatar, as Israel has announced that it is sending a delegation to discuss a possible agreement on Gaza, including the release of the hostages. Hamas has declared itself open to ceasefire talks, after previous attempts at mediation failed in August.
